Disqualifications

We know not everyone is a perfect candidate, but the LVMPD adheres to strict hiring standards when evaluating potential candidates for employment. All previous standings should be considered when applying. Please view our full employment standards here for an in-depth explanation.

Eligibility & Disqualification Basics

  • Character: If your overall history shows bad judgment or behavior, you may be disqualified.

  • Associations: Hanging out with criminals or people of bad reputation can disqualify you.

  • Appearance:

    • No visible tattoos on head, face, or neck (except a small, finger tattoo in place of a wedding band).

    • Beards/goatees are okay if they are neat and short; no shaved designs and must be within 1/4 inch in width.

    • Mustaches must be trimmed, not past the lip corners.

  • Criminal History:

    • Felony convictions considered a felony in Nevada = automatic disqualification.

    • 2 DUIs/DWIs = disqualified.

    • Domestic violence convictions = disqualified (for jobs involving firearms).

    • Arrests are reviewed case by case.

  • Warrants: More than 2 warrants in the past 3 years or any active warrant = disqualified.

  • Driving Record: Too many accidents/suspensions in last 2 years can disqualify you. No suspended/revoked license at time of hire.

  • Drugs: Illegal drug history will be reviewed for type, frequency, and recency. May disqualify you.

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required for all positions.

  • Work History: Past 10 years reviewed. Firings or performance issues will be considered.

  • Child Support: Applicants who are not current with child support will be disqualified.

  • Credit: Must resolve delinquent accounts before background check is done.

  • Social Media: Offensive/discriminatory content can disqualify you.

  • Civil Issues: Must resolve civil fines or penalties before hire.

  • Law Enforcement Applicants: No unresolved duty-related issues allowed.

  • Medical: Must pass a medical exam.

  • Military: Serious military discipline or non-honorable discharge may disqualify you.

  • Polygraph: Cheating on or lying during the test = disqualified.

  • Honesty: Lying or leaving out info (jobs, arrests, drug use, etc.) = disqualified.

  • Withdrawals: If you don’t complete the process or miss appointments, you’ll be removed. You can voluntarily withdraw and reapply later.

  • Citizenship: Police/Corrections must be U.S. citizens. Civilian jobs allow permanent residents.
