Specialized Units

The LVMPD has over 30 specialized units for both Police and Corrections Officers

  • SWAT

Working in conjunction with the Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT's mission is to respond and ultimately peacefully resolve critical incidents and high-risk situations with no loss of life. Even if this mission is not immediately accomplished, both teams are equipped with the ability to gather crucial intelligence and buy valuable time, which will allow for better decision-making and tactical planning.

  • K9

The LVMPD K-9 Section includes 15 officers, 3 sergeants, and 17 highly trained dogs skilled in narcotics and explosive detection, suspect tracking, and apprehension. While seen at community events, their primary mission is saving lives and reducing force by persuading suspects to surrender. Each K-9 forms a lifelong bond with its handler, often living together after retirement. Retired K-9s receive community-supported care through the LVMPD Foundation.

  • Air Support Search and Rescue

The LVMPD Air Support Unit provides aerial support for patrol officers across 8,000+ square miles of Clark County. Duties include surveillance, search and rescue, transport, motorcade escorts, and maintaining mountain radio sites. The fleet has five helicopters: one Airbus H145, one H125, and three MD 530Fs. Operating 20 hours daily, the unit includes 3 sergeants, 13 officer pilots, a maintenance supervisor, and 2 mechanics.

  • Gangs Vice Bureau

The Gang Crimes Section investigates gang-motivated and gang-related crimes, most of which are violent felonies. Gang Investigative Squads and Enforcement Teams provide 7-day coverage, combining investigations with proactive patrols to suppress gang violence. Working closely with LVMPD Area Commands and Investigative Bureaus, Gang Detectives and Officers support the Department’s mission to make our community the safest in America.

  • Medical Liaison

The Medical Liaison Unit is a specialized unit offered to Corrections Officers. Its main function is to help facilitate medical care to inmates when needed or requested.

  • Training and Counseling

Training and Counseling is a specialized unit at both the Corrections and Police academies. Officers placed in this unit are tasked with training the new recruits in their new roles as a police or corrections officer.

  • Inmate Programs/Re-entry Section

The Inmate Programs/Re-entry Section provides the opportunities for inmates to attend counseling programs, meet with community partners, and access resources available in the community. It tries to eliminate roadblocks that individuals may face as they return to the community.

  • Alternatives to Incarceration

Alternatives to Incarceration, or House Arrest, is a unit available to Corrections Officers to test into. This section uses technology to allow people, going through the legal process, to be out in the community. House Arrest is a great opportunity for Corrections Officers to be out in the community ensuring safety and to help those become an active member of society.
