  • Submitting an Application

Is this position right for you? If you meet the minimum qualifications, submit an application! Be sure to answer all questions truthfully and fill out the application in its entirety, providing all required documents and information. Once you submit, just sit back and HR will contact you after the position closes.

  • Minimum Qualifications Screening

Once you submit an application, HR and subject matter experts will review your submission to see if you meet the minimum qualifications. This process could take several days or weeks. If you are deemed a top candidate, HR will contact you with next steps.

  • Written & Fitness Exams

The written exam measures key areas for success as a recruit and officer and is weighted toward the candidate’s overall score and ranking. The fitness exam is pass/fail. You must also pass a second fitness test before entering the Academy and maintain or exceed those standards throughout training, aka Day 0. Not physically prepared? Recruiting offers PT sessions every Tuesday and Thursday!

  • Background Investigation Process

Once you pass, background detectives will begin your background investigation. Candidates must provide truthful and consistent information. This process includes an interview, written/oral psychological evaluations, and polygraph tests. Detectives review personal statements, verify details, and coordinate with examiners. Missing documents or discrepancies may result in disqualification. Don't worry! We'll help you along the way!

  • Eligible-to-Hire

Upon completion of your background investigation, the Selection Committee will review each candidate's life history, polygraph, and psychological evaluation. Once selected for hire, the Personnel Management Team (PMT) will contact each candidate to complete necessary paperwork, and schedule them for the POST Physical Fitness Exam and Medical Exam/Drug Test.

  • Meet with a Physician/Drug Test

Each candidate must complete a medical exam and pass a drug test before employment. Exams ensure candidates can perform essential job functions. LVMPD complies with all employment laws, including the ADA, and candidates will not be disqualified unless unable to perform duties with or without accommodation. For out-of-state candidates, most of the Background Investigation is completed in one Las Vegas visit, with the Medical Exam and Drug Test done closer to hire.

  • Pre-Academy Physical Fitness Testing

Both Corrections and Police recruits are required to pass the POST Physical Fitness Exam, also known as Day 0. This exam is the same as the first fitness exam, and occurs at the Corrections and Police academies, generally a week before the first day of the academy. If you pass, congrats, you are officially a recruit for the LVMPD!
