Medical Standards: What You Need to Know

If you’re applying for Police, Corrections, or certain civilian jobs, you’ll have to meet LVMPD’s medical standards.

Here’s a simplified breakdown:

  • The medical exam happens at the very end of the hiring process (after the Review Board decides to hire you).

  • The exam makes sure you can safely do the job.

  • We follow the ADA, so you won’t be disqualified unless you truly can’t perform the essential functions of the position, even with reasonable accommodations.

  • The info below is just a quick overview to help you self-check. It’s not the full list of medical standards:

    • Vision

      • Police + Select Civilians: Must have 20/20 vision (with glasses/contacts). Far vision must be at least 20/40 without correction, unless you’re wearing soft contacts you’ve used successfully for 6+ months.

      • Corrections: Must be 20/20 vision near and far, with or without glasses/contacts.

      • Color vision: You’ll take standard color tests. Passing one is fine, failing both is not. (And no, special “color lenses” aren’t allowed.)

      • Eye surgery (LASIK, PRK, etc.): You may need to wait up to 6 months post-surgery before testing. Records and a specialist review are required.

    • Hearing

      • Must hear tones at standard levels in both ears (tested without hearing aids).

      • If you use assistive devices and are covered under ADA, you’re not automatically disqualified, it just depends on your ability to do the job safely.
